Mustache Baby

Rating

And the question I... “mustache”... is, “Why?” (I'm so sorry.)

What. This is just-- what? So there's a baby, and he's born with a mustache. His parents ask the doctor what it means, and she says they have to figure out whether it's a "good guy mustache" or a "bad guy mustache." That makes no sense. At first it's a cowboy mustache, and then it becomes a police officer mustache, and then a bad guy mustache, and he steals things, because apparently mustaches with twirls in the ends are bad. It's like a mustache from a villain in a silent movie, but there are good people with that kind of mustache. And then his mother puts him in his crib, which is baby jail, and he's sad.

The moral seems to be what his mom says, "Everybody has a bad-mustache day now and then." Like, ha ha, a bad hair day. This doesn't make any sense. It's kind of like it's trying to say that you can choose to be good or bad, but it's not really succeeding at that, and is more coming across as "Different styles of mustache show who's good and who's bad, and who you should trust and be wary of," and that's not a good message. But it doesn't come across as realistic, so it's not quite a bad book. It's clearly trying to be silly. It's almost like it's a parody, without really having a clear reference point of what it's a parody of. But I'm not sure prejudice is a topic to be silly about. A mustache doesn't indicate who the person is, and they don't even say that. It feels like it's trying to capitalize on the success of Axe Cop, except it was written by an adult.

It's like they're saying that it's okay to discriminate against people with certain mustaches, because your mustache will change to fit your personality.
